Other Donation Opportunities

Safe Harbor House has Wish List registries set up with Amazon and Walmart for items often needed at the house. We have many champions who've been wonderful in providing for these needs!

Please click the below links to see what our current needs are and be sure to bookmark these links in your browser:

Also, when you shop at Amazon or Kroger, you can also support Safe Harbor at no cost to you! AmazonSmile donates 0.5% of the price of eligible AmazonSmile purchases, and Kroger Community Rewards provides a portion of eligible purchases to Safe Harbor.

PRAY

Receive our monthly prayer calendar that gives you a different way to pray each day for women who have been affected by trauma and addiction and for Safe Harbor’s ministry to them.  Contact us for a calendar.

We would also love to have new Prayer Teams and Small Groups springing up all over Ohio, joining together to pray for the CAUSES and for the women of Safe Harbor. If you would like to spearhead or join a Prayer Team at your church or small group, please contact Executive Director, Linda Mortensen.  Linda@safeharborhouse.org

Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteer opportunities are as varied and unique as the individuals who serve here, so this is by no means an exhaustive list.

Mentor

Once a week for about an hour, mentors listen, love on, and encourage a Safe Harbor resident. You just need to be a mature believer in Christ who shares God’s heart for the women of Safe Harbor. If interested, e-mail Linda@safeharborhouse.org.

Sponsor

Sponsors are women in recovery with a significant amount of clean time who have successfully worked the 12 steps of AA or NA. These volunteers commit to walking with a Safe Harbor resident through her own recovery journey, helping her work the steps.

Internships

If you are a college or graduate student interested in interning at Safe Harbor, contact our Executive Director, Linda Mortensen at linda@safeharborhouse.org.

Group Projects

If your small group, church, or school is interested in doing a service project at Safe Harbor, please let Linda know. We’d be blessed to have you!

Transportation

Every day we have up to 10 women all going different directions, needing rides to recovery meetings, dental appointments, volunteer commitments, trauma counseling, the grocery store, and work. This vital volunteer opportunity is an excellent way to connect with and invest in the women of Safe Harbor, not to mention immensely bless our staff.

GED Tutoring /Education Coach

For a variety of reasons, some of our residents have not been able to finish their formal education. They may need your help reaching a specific goal, like getting their GED, or more general help with completing Safe Harbor or recovery homework.

Life Skill Trainer

Do you have a special talent or interest in an area such as music, finance, fitness/nutrition, gardening, car maintenance, cooking, or any other teachable skill? Chances are, there is a resident of Safe Harbor interested in learning your craft. They just need a teacher!

Office Support

Our staff members work diligently each day in their own professional niches, supporting the residents, and strengthening the sustainability of Safe Harbor. Volunteers who help with office support give staff the time they need to focus on residents instead of on reception and paperwork.

House maintenance

If you are trained in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or other contracting skills, we’d love to have your help when maintenance issues arise.

Tech Support

Safe Harbor is a home as well as a business. We have several computers and printers, and we need occasional IT support from individuals who know more about computers than we do (hint: it’s not much)!

FAQ's

VOLUNTEER FAQ's

Who can volunteer at Safe Harbor?

Our volunteers are recovering addicts, pastors' wives, homeschooling moms, ministry leaders, laypersons, college students, retirees, business owners, professors, young professionals, counselors, handymen…. are you catching the drift? Whoever you are, whatever your story or background, YOU have something to offer. Don’t hesitate to contact us today.

Are there any restrictions on volunteering at Safe Harbor?

Very few. If you are under the age of 18, we ask that you come with an adult. Also, we need men as well as women to serve, but your volunteer opportunities may look different – call us to discuss how you can get involved!

Do I have to have any special skills to volunteer?

No, but we DO want you to thrive in your volunteer role! So when you apply, tell us about your interests, hobbies, and skills, and we’ll find a niche that suits you.

What steps do I need to take to volunteer?

See our page, “Volunteer Process” for a thorough explanation of how to get involved. In brief, you’ll need to fill out an application to let us know you’re interested. Then after we contact your references, we’ll schedule a volunteer orientation to get you acquainted with the ministry, and we’ll go from there!

Where do I show up?

Because of the nature of our ministry, we do not post our physical address anywhere on the internet. After you fill out a volunteer application and we’ve checked up with your references, we’ll let you know where we’re located so you can attend a volunteer orientation!

When and how often can I volunteer?

Pretty much anytime, as often as you’d like! We are a 24/7 ministry, but most of our volunteers come between the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday thru Saturday. We have volunteers who come once a week for a block of time, and others who come on an as-needed basis. This will depend on your availability and the capacity in which you serve. We have a wide variety of opportunities and we will work with your schedule as much as possible.

Will I need to bring anything?

This depends on the type of volunteering you do. If you are willing and able to do transportation, we will need a copy of your driver’s license (we provide a vehicle, so you don’t have to use yours). If you are going to be doing any yard work, cleaning, or maintenance, dress appropriately and bring necessary supplies if you can, as ours are limited! If you’re going to be here over lunchtime, you may want to bring your own meal to eat with the women. Also, it’s not a bad idea to bring a book or magazine if you end up waiting with a woman during an appointment. Other than that, if you need to bring anything with you, we’ll let you know in advance.

What should I wear?

If you plan to be doing yard work or cleaning, wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Otherwise, modest, comfortable, and casual clothes are ideal!
